The central government from January end will start issuing smart cards for social security coverage to 40 crore workers in the unorganized sector of the country. The smart card will be known as U-WIN (Unorganized Worker Identification Number) card and it will facilitate these workers to get benefits under numerous government welfare schemes.
Labour Minister Mr. Bandaru Dattatreya said that construction workers, autorickshaw and rickshaw pullers will be covered in the first phase of this initiative. The workers from the unorganized sector mainly can receive benefits of Rashtriya Swasth Bima Yojana, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana and old age pension with the U-WIN smart card.
He has also revealed that an additional burden of around Rs. 6,100 crore will be borne by the government due to the passing of the Bonus Bill.
