Germany to support India to develop Kochi, Bhubaneswar as smart cities

Germany is all set to partner with Indian government to help Kochi, Bhubaneswar and Coimbatore develop as smart cities.

  • The above mentioned three cities are among the top 20 cities to be developed as smart cities. State Secretary in Germany’s Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, Gunther Adler revealed that Germany will be involving in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Smart Cities Mission.
  • Germany earlier along with India had created a six-member joint committee to select cities which could be developed as smart cities. Among these six members, two representatives were from Urban Development Ministry and one from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation while the rest three members were from Germany. According to German Ambassador to India Martin Ney, Germany has been supportive towards India’s Smart Cities Mission.
  • Germany has already developed technologies which make living in cities much easier. Simultaneously, German companies have also developed smart solutions to develop smart cities. Mr. Ney also said that the country has been for quite some time involved in various fields related to smart cities like sustainable urban mobility, water and waste-water management, renewable energies and energy efficiency among others.
