• The Modi government is prepared to insulate farmers from the expected weak monsoon by providing cheap seeds, encouraging drought-resistant crops and preparing relief measures if the crucial rainy season disappoints rural India for the second year in a row.
• Agricultural ministry is prepared with contingency plans for 580 districts in case of a weak monsoon. A weak monsoon will affect two-thirds of population, which depends on agriculture directly or indirectly.
• Contingency plans include steps to improve management of rainwater, ensuring better soil health, providing better sees and farm implements as well as crop diversification.
• Officials at the Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture in Hyderabad said that they aim to include 40 more districts, mostly from North-East, this year in the contingency plan.
